HOSTS ZANZIBAR BUNDLED OUT OF REGIONAL YOUTH TOURNEY

 

 

NAIROBI, Aug. 22 (HANA)--Hosts Zanzibar were eliminated from the East and Central Africa Karume Challenge Cup Youth Under-20 tournament in Zanzibar here after losing 1-0 to Eritrea, Sunday night.

     The Eritreans’ scored the lone goal in the first half to eliminate the fighting Zanzibar side who did all they could but did not manage to score.

     Earlier in the day, Kenya and Burundi battled to a goalless draw, the same as Uganda and Sudan, all the four teams having already secured their quarter final slots.

     On Saturday, Ethiopia settled their nerves to reach the quarter finals after beating Somalia 1-0 while Tanzania revived their hopes with a 2-0 win over Rwanda.

    The last preliminary matches were played Monday.

    Five teams -Uganda, Eritrea, Burundi, Sudan and Kenya had reached the quarter-finals billed for Tuesday and Wednesday.

    The annual event that brings together all the eleven Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) members.

    Meanwhile, Cecafa met in Zanzibar over the weekend and released the fixtures for this year’s Senior Challenge Cup tournament, slated for Rwanda.

    According to Cecafa general secretary, Nicholas Musonye, the tournament is fixed for November 19 to 3 December 3.

    All the eleven teams have confirmed participation in the tournament sponsored by Sheikh Al Amoudi to the tune of 500,000 US dollars.

    The groupings: A-Rwanda, Kenya, Zanzibar and Eritrea. Group B Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti and Somalia. Group C Burundi, Sudan and Tanzania.
