Human Rights Watch is pleased to invite you to a news conference to be held in Nairobi on December 16, 2008. Researcher Juliane Kippenberg will present the findings and recommendations of a new Human Rights Watch report: “A Question of Life or Death: Treatment Access for Children Living with HIV in Kenya.”
The provision of antiretroviral drugs for AIDS treatment in Kenya has focused on adults, neglecting children. If left untreated, AIDS kills about half of all children born with HIV before their second birthday. The report documents barriers that children face in accessing testing and treatment. It is based on field research carried out in July-August 2007 and August 2008 in Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Coast provinces, and Nairobi. The research included 68 interviews with children, parents and guardians, as well as over 80 interviews with social workers, medical staff, nongovernmental organizations, and Kenyan government representatives.
